Artist's Description
This is a Kemp's Ridley turtle hatchling. This endangered baby is heading for the Gulf of Mexico where it will then try to live for years before returning to South Padre Island to lay eggs itself.
Watching a baby turtle (known as a "hatchling") struggle out of the nest and make its way to the water is an emotional experience. Everything from footprints to driftwood and crabs are obstacles, though this gauntlet is important for its survival.
I have watched many hatchlings being released on South Padre Island, Texas and each one is a very new experience.
About Charlene Adler
Charlene Adler is a native of Wisconsin and lives in both Wisconsin and Texas. As a retired teacher, having taught for 25 years, Art has always been a way to express myself whether it be oil painting or photography. To be able to capture an eagle in flight, a flower just blooming or a hummingbird flying is a joy to my heart. All my work is my own. Thank you Sabina. I volunteer at the Turtle Center in South Padre Island, Texas so see hatchling releases and rehabilitated turtle releases. Always a gamble if the hatchlings make it. Thank you for the response.
